Pastor Timothy L. Gaines, Sr.

Pastor Gaines Elder Timothy L. Gaines, the youngest of 5 children was born to Deacon Lonnie and the late Mother Bernice Gaines, on February 21, 1958 in Greensboro, North Carolina.  They were members of Wells Temple Church of God In Christ (now known as the COGIC Cathedral of the Wells Memorial Church of God In Christ) under the leadership of the late Bishop Wyoming Wells

The family relocated to the Washington Metropolitan area in January 1963 and began attending the New Bethel COGIC, under the leadership of the late Bishop Sherman Howard. They also attended the Kirkland Memorial COGIC under the leadership of the late Superintendant Isaac Sams, and the Temple COGIC (now known as Kelsey Temple COGIC), under the leadership of the late Bishop Samuel Kelsey.

Pastor Gaines, who is third generation Church of God in Christ has proven to be a vessel used by God; a man anointed, appointed and called for such a time as this. He gave his life to Christ at the early age of eleven and was baptized with the Holy Ghost at the age of sixteen. The family made the transition into the Greater Maryland 1st Jurisdiction working at the Glenarden COGIC under the leadership of Superintendant David Robinson.

As a young man excited to work in ministry for the Lord Jesus Christ, he functioned as the local Y.P.W.W. (young people willing workers) president.  He then worked as the District Y.P.W.W. president under (then) Superintendant David W. Spann, Sr. (who later became the Jurisdictional Prelate for the Greater Maryland 1st Jurisdiction).  He was the expediter for the Jurisdictional Youth Department, District Choir president of the Northwestern District, played the piano/organ for the local church as well as the District Choir; he played the drums and the bass for the Jurisdictional Choir.

He was a busy young person in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Receiving his call to minister the Word of God at the age of 16, he ran from his calling until the Lord got “a hold” of him and he finally heeded the call of God. He gave his initial sermon at the age of nineteen (“An omnipotent God” – Daniel 2:14-20) and was ordained at the age of 24

After being ordained, in May of 1982 he founded the Garden of Gethsemane COGIC and held services in a trailer on Whiskey Bottom Road in Laurel, MD where he served a little over two and one half years before moving to a storefront on 34th & Bunker Hill Road in Mt. Rainier, MD in 1985. As souls were added to the body, God gave the word for Pastor Gaines to step out a little further and in October of 1991, the church was able to purchase an old print shop at 4205 37th Street in Brentwood, MD. He and a hand full of workers began to gut out and refurbish the building, which is a beautiful edifice for the Lord. On November 1, 2011 we were able to walk into our new church home at 3501 Bunker Hill Road, Mt. Rainier, Maryland. “God has blessed us once again”

The vision that God has given the Pastor was as edifice large enough to house what is known as “The Vision Project”.   The vision includes Senior Citizens Facility/Daycare, a youth facility with computer training, as well as model behavior program for the teenagers, battered women’s shelter, the “Angel Tree Gift Program” for the children of inmates, exercise program and a banquet facility (we are on our way).  Throughout his ministry he has worked with the homeless, drug addicted and downtrodden.  He participated in the spiritual counseling program for the Baltimore County Correctional Facility.  He has a strong desire to see souls saved for the kingdom.

He took correspondence courses at the Moody Biblical College & business management at Prince George Community College. He also received a certificate of biblical studies from the Charles Harrison Mason Bible College.  He has received numerous awards and citations from the White House , State and Local Government officials.

While attending college, Pastor Gaines met Angel D. Thompson, (now Evangelist Angel Gaines). They were married on December 1, 1984. God has blessed their union with three talented and gifted children; Timea Angelese, Timothy Jr. and Tabitha Denise.

Currently Elder Gaines serves as Assistant Superintendent, District Treasurer and District Expediter for the C. H. Mason District.  He presently serves as the Jurisdiction Chief Adjutant under the leadership of Bishop Joel H. Lyles, Jr., and Regional Overseer for the East Coast Region and National Adjutant for the Church of God In Christ, Inc.  He also served as the Chairman of the Pastors and Elders Council of the Greater Maryland 1st Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction.

He is a man of God, who is a strong leader, mentor and friend. He has availed himself in the work of the Lord down through the years and has accomplished much. Self-motivated and hard-working are words that truly describe him. He lives by the motto “nothing can happen to me today that God and I cannot handle”.
